Scraps
Well, this is ackward.
This is the first time in years where I got the energy and motivation to push forward on blogging. I’ve been wanting to do it for a while now, but every time I had the motivation to push or forward, something else would come up, either profesionnally or due to my other engagements, but it seems like that the stars were aligned today, so here it is!
Why a blog?
Let’s address the elephant in the room first. While I see a lot of other people I admire stop writing blogs, and instead going to X articles, or creating yet another substack, I still think you should build your castle on your own kingdom, even if that means that I would not get as much attention or publicity. Getting to own and experiment in a space you entirely control feels… liberating in a way. I can experiment with design, some fancy shaders, even test my own deployment tools.
While I think I could have started writing things earlier if I didn’t have to create an entire website, I’m glad I spent the time to create it.
The technology stack
As I wanted to get something out the door fast, I used the same stack I usually use for my Martin Mystere events, or for work.
All is managed using Astro, with collections doing the heavy lifting for the blog you are reading right now, and some dynamic or more complex components are made using Svelte.
Things left to do
This site is really far from being perfect, as:
- The hero and footer are not the same size as the content
- The top bar is in a dire need of a rewrite to incorporate some design elements, instead of being the traditional font with a line below the currently selected section of the website
- I still have some improvements to readability to do
- Accessibility is a nightmare, and you need to do it right
